Babylonia’s conquest of Ashkelon shook the Judeans’ world. Chapter 35 describes the meeting in Jerusalem between Jeremiah and the Rechabites, a nomadic clan that fled the Shephelah for fear of the new conqueror. The prophet uses the Rechabites’ presence to demonstrate to the inhabitants of Jerusalem what true fidelity to tradition looks like. He invites the Rechabites to one of the Temple chambers (which presumably belongs to a supporter of his) and offers them goblets of wine.They decline:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They said: We will not drink wine, for our patriarch Jonadab son of Rechab commanded us: You and your sons must never drink wine. Nor shall you build a house, sow a field, or plant a vineyard, or have one; rather, you shall dwell in tents all your lives, that you may live long upon the land where you sojourn (6-7).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rechabites have a centuries-old family legacy. While we may speculate about why the patriarch imposed a life of wandering upon his descendants, Jeremiah is concerned not with their lifestyle itself – though he does not consider it ideal – but with their strict discipline. The prophet cannot tempt them with wine, because they envision their forefather before them. Jeremiah pits the Rechabites’ steely self-control against Israel’s fickleness:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe commands of Jonadab son of Rechab have been fulfilled: He ordered his descendants not to drink wine, and to this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefather’s command – but I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not heeded Me. Again and again I sent you all My servants, the prophets, saying: \u2018Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and reform your actions; do not follow other gods to serve them, and you will live in the land I have given you and your ancestors – but you have not paid attention or listened to Me.\u2019\u201d (14-15).<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the moral that Jeremiah extracts from the story of the Rechabites. From now on, he aims to penetrate the hearts of his people in Jerusalem – perhaps they will “turn from [their] wicked ways.” He wishes to exploit the frightening rise of an existential threat in order to restore Israel to its Father in Heaven.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
