It is bringing these two things together that made him such a powerful Navi.

In chapter 32, God told Jeremiah to buy a field in Anathoth. Jeremiah buys the field from his cousin, he demands of God to know why he was told to do this crazy thing: buying a field in Israel, in the city of the priests, when Israel is going be exiled. God says: “See, I will gather them from all the lands to which I have banished them in My anger and wrath, and in great rage; and I will bring them back to this place and let them dwell secure.”

God tells him that it symbolizes that Israel will come back and be able to live in the land again. Jeremiah combines the action of the purchase of land including all the necessary paperwork and witnesses, with the hopeful words of his prophecy, that this exile won’t be the end and that the Israelites shouldn’t lose all hope.

When Jeremiah is purchasing the field, he tells his cousin to put the documents in a clay jar to keep them safe. A jar just like the clay jar he smashed in chapter 19. What earlier was used as a symbol of destruction is now a symbol of safety and the future. All told, Jeremiah is trying to say that if Israel does not start following God again, they will be smashed just like the clay jar in chapter 19. But, if Israel follows God, then they will be safe, just as the clay jar is used as vessel to save the documents for the field. Again, Jeremiah’s use of both words and actions help to make his point come through and be even more powerful.

Jewishness might seem to be only about words and remembering and telling. Especially at this time of year, as we start to get ready for Passover, which is all about remembering, this feels especially true. That’s why we value the prophets so much, because they can talk to God and tell us, with their words, what God wants. Jeremiah is a prophet who is teaching us that we are not just a religion about remembering and telling, we are also a religion about doing. He serves as the “teller” with his poetic nevuot, but he also does different actions to make his points even more understood.

Jeremiah can also serve as a role model for us even in our daily lives.
