And their life-breath shall be like a watered garden, and they shall no longer be in pain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tricky Hebrew noun is the multivalent <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nefesh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It does not mean \u201csoul,\u201d as many translators continue to render it. The core meaning is \u201clife-breath\u201d and, by extension, \u201clife,\u201d but the latter would be misleading here because it could suggest \u201ca lived life.\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nefesh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also often implies \u201cessential self.\u201d It sometimes means \u201cthroat\u201d or \u201cgullet\u201d (by metonymy because the throat is a passageway for the breath), and that is the probable sense in verse 13, where the satisfaction of appetite is invoked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 2: Prophets, W.
