True, he contradicted Jeremiah\u2019s prophecy of subjugation by the Babylonians (2), but it was not inconceivable, at that time, that it could be reversed. Jeremiah, however, called him out and predicted his imminent death and, indeed, he died within two months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What confirmed the falsehood of his prophecy?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Torah provides guidelines for identifying false prophecy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But any prophet who presumes to speak in My name an oracle that I did not command him to utter, or who speaks in the name of other gods\u2014that prophet shall die. And should you ask yourselves, \u201cHow can we know that the oracle was not spoken by the LORD?\u201d\u2014 if the prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the oracle does not come true, that oracle was not spoken by the LORD; the prophet has uttered it presumptuously: do not stand in dread of him. (Deut. 18:20-22)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in verses 8-9, Jeremiah provided a critical addendum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prophets who lived before you and me from ancient times prophesied war, disaster, and pestilence against many lands and great kingdoms. So if a prophet prophesies good fortune, then only when the word of the prophet comes true can it be known that the LORD really sent him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadal* pointed out that the first of these two verses lacks an \u201capodosis\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gezeirah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the consequence clause of a conditional sentence. What about prophets who prophesied war, etc.? He completed the sentence based on the commentary of Rashi and a comment made by Maimonides in his Mishnah Commentary, to the effect that the failure of a disastrous prophecy to be fulfilled is not proof of falsehood, per se, because the intended victims might yet repent and the decree revoked. However, the failure of a benevolent prophecy to come to pass can only be de facto proof of its falsehood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incidentally, Shadal offered yet another judicious textual emendation of verse 8 (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/427\/post\/71054\">our comments on the previous chapter<\/a>), advising that the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ra`ah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (disaster) should be read as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ra`av<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (famine), given that it is paired with war and pestilence four more times in this book alone (24:10, 29:17, 32:24, 34:17) and is also attested to in manuscripts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*For an explanation of our objectives in studying Shadal\u2019s commentary, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/401\/post\/69068\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see our introduction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Jeremiah chapter 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: G.
