Chapter 27 opens with “At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah,” but it is clear to anyone who reads the chapter in context that the name “Jehoiakim” should be amended to “Zedekiah.” The content of the chapter undoubtedly reflects the beginning of Zedekiah’s reign, and more precisely, his fourth year on the throne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Traditional exegetes do not address this issue, since they deal not with the milieus of the prophets, only with the general lessons of their prophecies. In the <\/span>Daat Mikra<\/span><\/i> commentary on the Book of Jeremiah, M. Bolle engages in apologetics to avoid amending Scripture. He claims that “it appears that this prophecy was said twice…but appears in the Book of Jeremiah only once.” Y. Hoffman shows (in Jeremiah) that in the Septuagint this chapter has no introductory verse at all, and the title it eventually received resulted from its proximity to the previous chapter, which (correctly) opens at the beginning of Jehoiakim’s reign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During this year of his reign, a summit is held in Judah for representatives of (almost) all of the nations in the area in an attempt to formulate a strategic consensus of the nations in the region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah sends five yokes \u2014 the kind used to drive animals as they work the field \u2014 to the leaders gathering in Jerusalem, thereby delivering his prophetic message: Submit to the yoke of Babylonian leadership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah keeps returning to his most deeply held principles: God controls geopolitics, and He has chosen Nebuchadnezzar to rule the world at this time. This decision cannot be revoked, and anyone who rebels against it is in fact rebelling against God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It seems that the exiled Jews are not the only ones with prophets calling for rebellion against Babylon. Every nation has its prophets. The emerging regional political consensus is not to remain subject to the King of Babylonia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah screams at anyone and everyone: Do not listen to those who claim they speak the word of God \u2014 they are lying! His repetition of the same messages indicates the depth of his distress. He rails against zeitgeist and conventional wisdom. He repeatedly uses the phrase “declares the Lord” to convince his audience that all his statements are the literal word of God. But this tactic only underscores his powerlessness in the face of statements by other prophets, who complacently call on their kings to depend on Egypt. But Jeremiah is certain that whoever remains loyal to Nebuchadnezzar will survive in his land, and that whoever rebels will be exiled and executed.<\/span><\/p>\n
