  1. When?<\/em> This chapter takes place during the reign of Zedekiah (verse 1 is misleading, note the rest of the chapter), apparently in the fourth year, 594-3 BCE. Why? As a result of the general rebellions all over Mesopotamia against Nebuchadnezzar, the surrounding nations also took up arms in revolt. The gathering in Jerusalem that is described here was apparently a strategizing council, to plan the attack. The historical record shows that the kings did not in the end rebel in this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. This yoke is no joke<\/em>. These aren\u2019t just words. In the prophecy in this chapter, with Jeremiah in the role of \u201cprophet to the nations,\u201d he engages in symbolic acts that clearly express how they are supposed to react. That is – submit to Babylonia.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. False prophets – a regional problem<\/em>. That\u2019s the conclusion to be drawn from verses 9-10.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. You\u2019re done here<\/em>. That is, Babylonia. God has granted them the job of subjugating the whole region. But that is for now, and it is time-bound \u201cAll nations shall serve him, his son and his grandson\u2014until the turn of his own land comes, when many nations and great kings shall subjugate him\u201d (verse 7). Her turn will come eventually.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Prophecy and prayer<\/em>. Jeremiah makes a connection between prophecy and prayer. He says: if the prophets were true prophets, they should be praying for the annulment of the decree. Just as he does, with all his heart, and more than once (until God tells him to cease).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
