The place is the \u201croyal palace of Judah,\u201d of which the God declared, \u201cYou are as Gilead to Me, as the summit of Lebanon, but I will make you a desert [of] uninhabited towns\u201d (6).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the specific qualities of Gilead and Lebanon that lend themselves to the description of a royal palace? Rashi, relying again, on the Aramaic Targum, interpreted Gilead and Lebanon as poetic descriptions of the Temple, which is called Gilead because it is \u201cwhence curative balm comes to the world\u201d (based, assumedly, on an earlier verse: \u201cIs there no balm in Gilead? Is there no cure there?\u201d 8:22). Radak regarded it as a form of metonymy: the \u201croyal palace\u201d (like \u201cthe White House\u201d) is representative of all of Judah. This is analogous to the use of \u201cGilead\u201d in the Torah to signify all of Transjordan, and \u201cLebanon,\u201d which was used by Moses as synonymous with the entire land of Israel (Dt. 3:25). In other words, all of Judah will be destroyed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadal* granted partial recognition to Radak\u2019s interpretation, focusing, however, on the topography of the Gilead \u201cwhich was famous for its mountains and forests.\u201d \u201cTherefore, he compared them to the summit of Lebanon, a lofty and majestic mountain known for its cedars.\u201d Malbim combined several earlier elements to yield the following contrast: \u201cEven if you were like the Gilead, a desirable settled land, and just like the summit of Lebanon is filled with cedars and other trees you will be filed with people, I will still transform you into a wilderness, the opposite of Gilead, and into unpopulated cities, the opposite of
