This chapter brings together prophecies addressed to the last kings of Judah. Jeremiah calls for doing “what is just and right” (3, also see 15\u201316) and connects Jerusalem’s destruction to the failures of the highest authorities in the land. Accompanying this theme is the literary motif of the cedar of Lebanon. Jeremiah refers to the royal house of Judah as “the summit of Lebanon” (6) and “You who dwell in Lebanon, nestled among cedars” (23). In the prophecy against Jehoiakim (13\u201315), Jeremiah mocks the physical features of the king’s palace, built on the backs of workers poorly treated (13). Among these features are cedar panels (14), which receive special mention in the prophet’s condemnatory question: “Do you think you are more a king because you compete in cedar?” (15).<\/span><\/p>\n

Behind this motif lies cedar wood’s status as a luxury building material in the biblical world. It had to be imported (see 1 Kings 8:21\u201325), and, among the elite, it was much preferred to sycamore wood, the locally available option. About a century before Jeremiah, the prophet Isaiah quotes the inhabitants of Samaria in the Kingdom of Israel, who “in arrogance and haughtiness,” say, “Bricks have fallen\u2014we’ll rebuild with dressed stone; sycamores have been felled\u2014we’ll grow cedars instead” (Isaiah 9:8\u20139).\u00a0 They believe that their kingdom can recover from the ravages of the Assyrian empire, and rebuild itself bigger and better, with dressed stone and cedar instead of bricks and sycamore. Indeed, with an average height of 40 meters (twice the average height of sycamore’s 20 meters), cedar wood serves well for large construction projects.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cedar and the monarchy are virtually synonymous. Solomon’s palace was called the “Lebanon Forest House,” on account of the rows of cedar columns (1 Kings 7:2\u20133).\u00a0 Generations later, the connection remains, now as symbols of injustice and objects of the prophet’s
