  1. Royal timeline<\/em>. A brief foray into the history of the kings mentioned in this chapter. Josiah was killed in the year 609 BCE by Pharaoh Necco. His son Jehoachaz (Shullam) reigned after him for a brief three months, since Egypt, the ruling power, exiled him, and installed his brother Jehoiakim in his place. Jehoiakim ruled for 11 years, during which time, the Babylonians took control. Jehoiakim rebelled against them, and Nebuchadnezzar waged a military campaign against him. Jehoiakim died, and his son Jehoiachin (Coniah) took over. He, too, was able to rule only three months, and then in 597 BCE, was exiled to Babylonia, together with the rest of the nobility of Jerusalem (the exile of the craftsmen and the smiths – see 2 Kings 24:14).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Background lament<\/em>. This chapter is accompanied by a soundtrack of keening laments. See for instance vv. 10 and 18. There is a general occupation with the question of who will die, when and where, and how they will be buried.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Now that\u2019s how you build a luxurious palace<\/em>. Big: \u201ca vast palace With spacious upper chambers;\u201d Light and airy: \u201cProvided with windows;\u201d Imported wood finishing \u201cPaneled in cedar,\u201d with bright colors: \u201cPainted with vermilion!\u201d (v. 14). This is as we know \u201cbuilt with unfairness,\u201d with exploitation of the people and its resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Folk sayings and routine laments<\/em>. In this prophecy there is both the formulation of the lament for the distinguished (v. 18) and a familiar aphorism \u201cDo you think you are more a king Because you compete in cedar?\u201d (v. 15). We saw a variation of this 99 chapters ago in 2 Kings 14.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Eretz, eretz, eretz<\/em>. There are many reasons why someone would repeat something more than once. For emphasis, for purposes of persuasion, out of frustration, to fit the melody of a song, to shout and be heard.
