To clarify the identification of a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mahpekhet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the meaning of Pashhur, we will compare the commentary of Shadal* to those of Rashi and Radak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi followed the Aramaic Targum, interpreting <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mahpekhet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a place of confinement in which a prisoner is kept under physical duress. Radak added his father Joseph Kimhi\u2019s opinion that it is \u201csomething made of two pieces of wood with a hole cut out in which they place the prisoner\u2019s neck.\u201d In other words, a pillory. Shadal took note of Rashi\u2019s interpretation, and related it to the Talmudic jail, called a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kippah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which a recalcitrant lawbreaker was forced (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kafuy<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to lie flat because it had room for only one body. Because Jeremiah was \u201cremoved\u201d from it rather than \u201craised\u201d from it (3), Shadal deduced that it was not underground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the name Pashhur, Rashi explained it as a contraction of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pash <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(flowing) + <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hur<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (freely), signifying \u201ca great man,\u201d as did his student Yosef Kara, and therefore Jeremiah\u2019s wordplay (\u201cGod has not named you Pashhur, but fear-all-about\u201d) is a deliberate diminution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak\u2019s commentary here is outstanding in this respect: He treats the phrase \u201cGod has called your name\u201d not as an actual name giving, but as a euphemism for revelation. Since Pashhur took exception to Jeremiah\u2019s prophecy because he thought himself a prophet, God was telling him to beware the consequences of his folly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
