Jeremiah’s attack on Pashhur also stems from his loneliness and frustration, as we see in his accusation of God: “You have seduced me, O Lord, and I was seduced.” All his years of prophetic isolation have resulted from God’s irresistible seduction. Mockery and shame have become his lot. Though he tries to ignore the word of God, he is unable to contain himself. It bursts from him “like a burning fire trapped in my bones.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The prophet cannot escape his prophecies. Many such as Magor-missabib, Pashhur’s symbolic new name, consider him a troublesome slanderer: “Denounce, and let us denounce him!… Perhaps he will be seduced, and we will prevail over him and wreak our vengeance on him.” This is the powerful lament of an afflicted soul that cannot escape its prophetic visions. One of its most impudent expressions is its accusation against God: “But the Lord is with me like a mighty tyrant” (20:11). Jeremiah feels that God is abusing him. His prophecy ensnares him from within; God’s word traps him and beats him mercilessly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In his poem “With My God, the Smith,” Uri Zvi Greenberg expressed this tension between prophet and God, depicting the prophet as a mass of metal struck by the smith, God, in order to generate sparks:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Like chapters of prophecy my days burn, in all the revelations,\u00a0
\n<\/span>And my body between them is a block of metal for smelting,\u00a0
\n<\/span>And over me stands my god, the Smith, who hits hard:\u00a0
\n<\/span>Each wound that Time has opened in me opens its mouth to him\u00a0
\n<\/span>And pours forth in a shower of sparks the intrinsic fire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is my just lot \u2014 until dusk on the road.\u00a0
\n<\/span>And when I return to throw my beaten block on a bed,\u00a0
\n<\/span>My mouth is an open wound,\u00a0
\n<\/span>And naked I speak with my god:\u00a0
\n<\/span>You worked hard.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Now it is night; come let us both rest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
