Jeremiah is vacillating between the king’s message of hope and his own knowledge that even reform will not save Jerusalem. He waits for God to guide him through this maze of uncertainty, and ultimately he receives a prophetic vision. Chapter 18 describes Jeremiah’s visit to a potter’s workshop. The opening verses of the chapter suggest that God has bidden him to go to the workshop after his pleas to hear the word of the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n

The prophet has been seeking God’s word in an effort to resolve the conflict burning within him. How can he live with the knowledge that God will uproot and tear down, obliterate and destroy, alongside the hope of spiritual renewal, the ingathering of exiles, and the promise of security in the land? In the workshop, Jeremiah meets the potter sitting at his wheel and creating vessels, constantly destroying his handiwork in order to form a vessel he considers superior. God guides Jeremiah through an understanding of his first vision, which indeed foretold destruction and eventual flourishing. However, despite Huldah’s fatalistic diagnosis, in Jeremiah’s world there is room for correction and healing. Hopelessness and despair have seized the people in view of the enormity of their sin. Even those who hear the king reading from the newly discovered Torah scroll do not believe in the power of repentance:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: “Thus said the Lord: I am preparing a disaster for you and devising a plan against you, so let each man turn from his evil way, and reform your ways and actions. But they will say: \u2018It is hopeless; we will follow our own notions,\u2019 and each man will act on the wickedness of his stubborn heart\u201d (18:11-12).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The people are convinced that the king’s campaign will not alter the harsh decrees, and that there is no way to survive the wrath of God. As a result, a familiar attitude coalesces: “Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” Let us at least enjoy life while it lasts. Jeremiah’s prophetic encounter at the pottery workshop inspires him to support the king’s program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
