In 1870 the first Jewish youth village was established, south of Jaffa, on a plot of 750 acres, leased from the Ottoman Sultan. Charles Netter, of the French Alliance organization, who was the first headmaster and initiator of this unique \u201cstart-up\u201d project, introduced new progressive educational methods along with agricultural training. The purpose was to train the future farmers of the land.\u00a0<\/span>This school was quite a visionary breakthrough, considering it was founded more than a decade before the \u201cFirst Aliya\u201d, when there were only approximately\u00a0 20,000 Jews in the country, mostly traditional, living in the four holy cities Jerusalem, Tiberias, Tzefat and Hebron.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The school quickly took its place among the most prestigious sites of the country. In 1898, during Herzl’s only visit to the Land of Israel, he met the German Emperor Wilhelm II at the main entrance of the school for a famous picture. For many years the school served as the main research center for the country, and today is still an active school, with close to 400 students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The name Mikveh Yisrael was taken from two passages in the Book of Jeremiah, Jeremiah 14:8 and today\u2019s chapter 17:13: <\/span><\/p>\n

O Hope of Israel! O LORD! All who forsake You shall be put to shame, Those in the land who turn from You Shall be doomed men, For they have forsaken the LORD, The Fount of living waters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The name was proposed by Wolf Grinstein, one of the school’s first students, who later became a teacher there. Today\u2019s verse is read in the haftara of the Torah portion Bechukutai, which was read during the week of the opening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The word \u201cmikveh\u201d has a double meaning, both a source of water and of hope. The root of \u201cmikveh\u201d is the word <\/span>kav<\/span><\/em>, line, which implies drawing to one place, like the water in Genesis 1:9: \u201clet the water\u2026 be gathered into one area\u201d\u2026 This too, in a way, is the essence of hope: a gathering of wishes and aspirations to one focal point, from which actions are initiated, as opposed to \u201cday dreaming.\u201d The Talmud (Yoma 85:b) adds another layer of meaning: \u201cMikveh Yisrael\u201d, says Rabbi Akiva, is a way to describe God: water is everywhere and has been here since the beginning of time; and, just like water purifies those who were afflicted by some form of spiritual impurity, so too, God is our mikveh who will purify us by immersing ourselves in Him.<\/span><\/p>\n
