Like many, when I think of Shabbat, I think of the sights and smells of the amazing food, the beautiful tunes in shul and the struggle to power through and stay awake while reading on the couch. To me, those positive aspects of Shabbat are the most special part of being Jewish. Within those 25 hours, it always feels like I belong to a secret club, isolated in time while the rest of the world goes on around me. And part of what makes it so special to me is that every person who observes Shabbat will do it just a little bit differently and for different reasons. I find it a privilege. Something I kept one way when I was younger and learned to love on a whole different level as I grew older. Shabbat is not just a time of the week; Shabbat is an experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

And so, when I think of Shabbat, the furthest thing from my mind is reward and punishment. But in Jeremiah 17:21-27, we see God speaking through Jeremiah telling the people not to carry burdens on Shabbat. God is presenting a choice: either keep Shabbat… or don\u2019t. But keeping Shabbat is undoubtedly a much better option.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the people keep Shabbat, they are promised that kings will enter through the gates of the city of Jerusalem – a city that will be inhabited for all times. But, if they do not keep Shabbat, then God warns them the gates and fortresses of the city will be burned and consumed in a tremendous fire that can\u2019t be extinguished.<\/span><\/p>\n

Presented this way, it\u2019s a no brainer. It feels like less of a choice and more of an edict that they have to keep Shabbat. And this makes me feel uncomfortable. I would hate to feel forced to celebrate Shabbat and I am thankful that we can observe our foundational Jewish practice in our own terms. Shabbat provides a feeling of closeness with God and therefore should not be something we are forced to do, but something we feel in our hearts.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
