Like a partridge hatching what she did not lay, so is one who amasses wealth by unjust means; In the middle of her life she will leave it and in the end he will be proved a crooked person (17:11).<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah is a product of Anathoth, a village of Jewish priests 20 kilometers north of Jerusalem. Anathoth borders on the Judean Desert. The naturalist Noga Hareuveni wrote an entire book explaining many of Jeremiah’s prophecies based on desert and shepherding imageries. Jeremiah also uses the desert\u2019s fauna and flora to illustrate the messages of his prophecies. In chapter 17, Jeremiah uses the nesting habits of the sand partridge to teach a lesson about honesty and reputation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sand partridge is a typical desert bird that is found in the Judean Desert and Negev. At the approach of spring, the female searches for the perfect nesting place. After visiting dozens of potential sites, she picks a place to build her nest, lines it with grass and feathers, and lays 8-14 eggs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Occasionally, two or more female birds will choose the same nest to lay their eggs.\u00a0 Eventually, one of the mothers will chase the other birds away from “her” nest. She will then try to incubate her own eggs, as well as the eggs of the female birds that she has driven off.\u00a0 However, the sand partridge does not have enough body heat to incubate such a large number of eggs, and as a result not even one egg can receive the necessary amount of warmth needed to develop the embryo. Upon realizing that the eggs will not hatch, the female partridge will abandon the nest and her unhatched eggs.<\/span><\/p>\n

One can imagine Jeremiah coming across one such nest in the Judean desert. In his prophecy, he points to these unhatched eggs to show that \u201ccrime does not pay,\u201d and in fact will cause much embarrassment to the dishonest individual. The greedy partridge loses her own eggs, and her acts of deceit will become well known. So too, one who has taken money in a dishonest manner will end up losing one\u2019s money and will be publicly known as a crooked person.<\/span><\/p>\n

In today’s digital age where FOMO (fear of missing out) is so rampant, Jeremiah’s parable can also teach us another lesson. Chasing all the current trends could cause one to lose one\u2019s own unique qualities. Perhaps before downloading another app or joining an additional group, we should take Jeremiah\u2019s advice and think about the partridge.<\/span><\/p>\n
