In the early days of Josiah’s reform, the culture promoted by his grandfather Manasseh is still palpable within Jerusalem. Ignorance and abandonment of the Torah are rampant. One of the most prominent signs of this neglect is the desecration of the Sabbath. The commercial culture of that era utilizes all seven days of the week for the rat race, regarding Sabbath observance as a symptom of laziness. When prophets and leaders draw attention to the Sabbath \u2014 particularly in the public sphere \u2014 their words express the very real crisis underlying the state of affairs in Israel. This chapter in Jeremiah imploring the people to resume their observance of the Sabbath is one such example…<\/span><\/p>\n

It seems that the residents of Jerusalem are not yet meticulous about the prohibition of commercial dealings on the Sabbath, despite Josiah’s initial religious enactments. The revolution is still in its early stages. In his early prophecies, Jeremiah still believes he has a receptive audience. His prophecy is not yet pessimistic, and he contrasts the blessings inherent in Sabbath observance with the curses stemming from its desecration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah clearly invokes the language of Deuteronomy (<\/span>vehaya im shamoa tishme’u<\/span><\/em> – “and it shall come to pass if you diligently hearken”). He makes the novel claim that the consecration or desecration of the Sabbath is the key to the peace and glory of Jerusalem, or, God forbid, to its destruction. This insight is derived from the extent of Jerusalem’s syncretism prior to Josiah’s reformation, as described by the prophet Zephaniah in the first chapter of his book. Among other things, Zephaniah emphasizes the bustling trade that filled the streets of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, in which all the neighboring peoples participated. Sabbath observance will reunite Judah and Israel against the surrounding nations and symbolize a renewal of the covenant between God and His people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
