The language of this opening indicates that Jeremiah shares this particular prophecy with a small, intimate group that has gathered around him, rather than broadcasting it in public.

Usually, a prophet’s symbolic gestures are active, that is, the prophet does something. In this instance as well, even though the gesture is characterized by Jeremiah’s inaction — not marrying — when a thirty-year-old refuses to marry, it sends a bold, shocking message.

This prophetic revelation shows Jeremiah that everyone in “this place” will die in an act of God. In a few years, in the time of Jeconiah, a letter from Jeremiah will accompany the first group of exiles from Jerusalem to Babylon, commanding them to “marry women and sire sons and daughters” (29:6). Later still, shortly before the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple, Jeremiah, confined to the prison courtyard, will impart a vision of consolation: This place will yet ring out with “The sound of joy and the sound of gladness, the sound of the groom and the sound of the bride” (33:11). Jeremiah perceives the act of marriage and raising a family as a worthy, blessed act, but not in “this place.” In this respect, his celibacy serves as a sign and demonstration of his curse that all who bear children in “this place” will lose them, and that grief will befall the entire community.

This is not a one-time action (like the acts of Ezekiel, for example), but the establishment of a mode of existence for a young prophet condemned to barrenness and isolation. It is one of the climactic moments of Jeremiah’s tragedy. From now on, rather than follow the course of life, he pursues that of death and destruction.

Lau, Binyamin. Jeremiah: The Fate of a Prophet.
