In this chapter, Jeremiah rails against the appearance of piety among the people of the Judean kingdom, addressing them from the gates of the temple. Jeremiah is commanded by God to call out to those who enter the temple, with a mocking refrain:<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t put your trust in illusions and say, \u201cThe Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD are these [buildings]\u201d (7:3).<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the illusion of these people? They appear to believe that God will always protect God\u2019s Temple. They assert that their actions in the Temple are sufficient to save them from God\u2019s wrath.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah comes to the very gates of the temple to reject this notion:<\/span><\/p>\n

No, if you really mend your ways and your actions; if you execute justice between one man and another; if you do not oppress the stranger, the orphan, and the widow; if you do not shed the blood of the innocent in this place; if you do not follow other gods, to your own hurt\u2014 then only will I let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers for all time (7:4-6).<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah suggests repeatedly in this chapter that murder, theft and oppression of the weak are commonplace (as are idolatry and others). In this chapter, we begin to see Jeremiah as a social justice crusader as well as a crusader for fidelity to God. The people, it appears, serve false gods, oppress the weak, and come to the Temple to seek salvation through their service of the true God, but this service is loathsome to God coming from murderers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where does this false sense of security come from? Rabbi Alex Israel points to the miraculous salvation of Jerusalem in 2 Kings 19. In his book, <\/span>II Kings: In A Whirlwind<\/span><\/em>, he writes that \u201cironically, the wondrous miracle of Jerusalem\u2019s rescue from Sennacherib\u2019s attack made it almost impossible for subsequent generations to believe the words of the prophet as he threatened the impending demise of the city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In our chapter, God threatens \u201cmy anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place\u201d but it does not make an impression on the people. In subsequent chapters, we continue to see Jeremiah chastise them for the same sins. We know from 2 Kings, though, that nothing changes. Their faith in the invulnerability of Jerusalem is apparently unshaken.<\/span><\/p>\n

In financial advertisements, you may have seen the following disclaimer: \u201cPast performance is not a guarantee of future results.\u201d The same is true today. Like the Jews of Jerusalem should have asked, we too should wonder: on which laurels are we resting?
