Chapter 7 of Jeremiah opens with God again admonishing the people about their behavior and its consequences. \u201cImprove your ways and your deeds and I will cause you to dwell in this place (7:3).\u201d Unlike previous passages in which the prophecy focuses on the threat of exile and destruction as a result of idol worship, here God reframes it in the positive, stating the reward should the people heed His word. \u201cI will cause you to dwell in this place\u201d, meaning they will earn the privilege of living in the land of Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is never a question about possessing the land, because that was already promised, reiterated and detailed multiple times throughout Torah. But owning something and having the merit to use it for good are two different things. The former is given, the latter is earned.<\/span><\/p>\n

God goes on to tell us how we earn the right to dwell in our land, describing how to fulfill the directive to \u201cimprove your ways and deeds (7:3-6).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. \u201cDo not trust the false statements that say, The Sanctuary of the LORD, the Sanctuary of the LORD, the Sanctuary the LORD are they (7:4)!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Truly do justice between man and his fellow;<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Do not oppress strangers, orphans or widows;<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Do not shed innocent blood; and<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Do not go after other gods.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Interpretations on the triple use of the phrase \u201cthe sanctuary of the LORD\u201d include that it refers to the three temple services (Targum); three parts of the inner sanctuary (Radak); the previously destroyed three temples at Shilo, Nob and Gideon (Midrash); and the three Temples that will be given to us, the first two of which are temporary (Talmud Nazir 32b).<\/span><\/p>\n

    Malbim\u2019s take on this verse suggests that a different syntax defines the real meaning. It is not a triplicate repetition but a duplicate \u201cthe sanctuary of the LORD\u201d followed by a clarification. The intent of this verse, says Malbim, is to be read as, do not trust the false prophets who say that it is the physical Temple of the LORD that causes God to reside there. Rather, \u201cThe Sanctuary of the LORD are THEY!\u201d \u2013 the Jewish people themselves. It is the people and their good deeds that bring God\u2019s presence to the Temple.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The agency for God\u2019s dwelling in the Temple and our dwelling in our land is our own: our good deeds, and relationships with others and with God. And the road map for that is provided in five steps. Perhaps we\u2019re doing something right because we are dwelling in the land. Now we need to work toward being the sanctuary in which God can reside.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
