Just as Jeremiah’s first prophecy heralded the coming of both destruction and rebuilding, just as his first visions were of a flowering almond branch as well as a wind-blown tumbleweed, the prophet constantly oscillates between hope and despair. There are many indications that these chapters relate his early forays into prophecy, while he is yet discovering the nation’s impatience and the Godless leadership that is lulling the people to sleep. Jeremiah perceives Josiah as a genuinely righteous leader, but he alone is not strong enough to extricate the people from the mire of idolatry. On the one hand, Jeremiah wishes to emulate Moses, who implored God even after the sin of the Golden Calf, begging Him to rescind His anger. On the other hand, he feels that Israel’s fate has been sealed and that the gates of prayer have been locked before him. Despite the constant updates on the purging of all idolatry from the land, Jeremiah portrays Jerusalem’s backyards, where almost every family still participates in the worship of heavenly bodies:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for you, do not pray for this people; do not utter a cry or prayer for them, and do not beg Me, for I will not listen to you. Do you not see what they are doing throughout the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? The children gather wood, and the fathers build fires, and the women knead dough in order to make cakes to offer to the queen of heaven, and they pour libations to foreign gods in order to provoke Me…. Tell them: This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord, their God, and has not accepted correction; truthfulness has perished, cut from their mouths (7:16-18, 28).<\/span><\/p>\n
