Our verse seems to reflect Abraham’s unsuccessful attempt to save the city of Sodom (Gen. 18:23-32). Significantly, in Abraham’s time, God would have eventually been willing to spare the sinful city for the sake of only ten righteous persons living there. While in Jeremiah’s time, God would have been willing to spare Jerusalem for the sake of just one righteous person.

This comparison between the time of Jeremiah and the time of Abraham is reflected in Midrash Tanhuma Vayera 8. “Abraham remained standing before the Lord. Abraham came forward and said, ‘Will You sweep away the innocent along with the guilty?’” (Gen. 18:23). Abraham’s plea suggests that the Holy One, blessed be He, has no desire to condemn any of his creatures, as it is said: “For I do not desire the death of anyone who dies, says the Lord God” (Ezek. 18:32)…What does the Holy One, blessed be He, desire? To seek the righteousness of His creatures…Be it known to you that when human beings sin God overcomes His anger by seeking an advocate to speak in their defense. God even points the way to how sinners might be defended. For you find that in the time of Jeremiah, God said: “Roam the streets of Jerusalem, Search its squares, Look about and take note: You will not find a man, There is none who acts justly, Who seeks integrity That I should pardon her” (Jer. 5:1).

Rabbi David Kimhi (RaDaK — 12th-13th century, Provence), relying on an interpretation of this verse received from his father, suggests that there were some pious people in Jerusalem at the time of Jeremiah’s prophecy. But they had gone into hiding in their homes, unable to show themselves on the streets, for fear of the evil people who dominated Jerusalem.

Talmud Bavli Shabbat 119b records a discussion of why Jerusalem was subsequently conquered and devastated. Rav Qatina said that even prior to the fall of Jerusalem, “men of faith” were still to be found there. But Raba countered that Jerusalem could only have been destroyed when there were no “seekers of faith” left, as it says: “Look about and take note: You will not find a man, There is none who acts justly…” (Jer. 5:1). This ancient tradition suggests that throughout our history it is those who have dealt justly and “kept the faith” who, by their righteousness, have continued to protect Jerusalem.

2020-01-28
