With the Book of Jeremiah, the tone and context shift. Isaiah was speaking from the fulness of Judah\u2019s monarchy, when the possibility of making choices that could strengthen the moral fiber of the nation remained a real possibility. He was the prophet of hope, speaking in a time of hope. A few hundred years later, Jeremiah speaks when it is too late, and what remained possible was more constricted because of the series of poor choices that Israel and its monarchs had made. Jeremiah is the prophet of consequences, forcing the people to see the link between the series of poor decisions and the disastrous outcome that followed in their wake.<\/span><\/p>\n

And yet\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah isn\u2019t entirely giving in to tragedy and crisis. Even in the worst moments, there remain glimmerings of goodness, potential for decency to gain ground and eventually to burst forth again in triumph. In the sorrow of defeat and exile, Jeremiah remains to remind the children of Israel that all is not lost. Not if they fix their vision on the long term. Not if they take ownership of their immorality and greed and make the kinds of priorities that reflect their mission as children of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even in the charge he is given, that underlying identity emerges. God tells Jeremiah that the Divine Word has been placed in Jeremiah\u2019s mouth, and appointed him \u201cto uproot and to smash, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Because there are times when the most constructive act is to uproot and to smash. In the face of stubborn evil and barbarous hate, resistance is the path toward righteousness. But resistance cannot be the only tool in the box. At some point, the containment of evil must give way to the establishment of goodness, compassion, and justice. There is a time to build and to plant.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are called to discern in both instances: when is resistance and combat the necessary response to the venality of a place or time, and when is coalition building and transformation the call of the age?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah is here to chew us out for the narcissism, greed, and lack of vision that brought us to this precipice.
