  1. Anathoth.<\/em> Anathoth is a village in Benjamin, at the edge of the desert, very close to Nachal Prat (Wadi Kelt). This biographical detail, with its unique landscape and natural environment, is one of the sources of inspiration for Jeremiah. Remember that. Another important biographical tidbit is that Jeremiah is from a family of priests. What are priests doing out in Anathoth? His is a priestly family that was ousted back in the days of King Solomon, 112 chapters ago (1 Kings, 2). Does this history affect Jeremiah? Stay with us\u2026.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. This isn\u2019t the end<\/em>. According to verse 3, Jeremiah acts from 627 BCE until slightly after the Exile. That is, the month of Av, 586 BCE. That already is 41 whole years. But in the rest of the book, we\u2019ll meet him still active and prophesying after the destruction, to those who stayed in the Land, with Gedalya, son of Achikam (chapter 42), and even in Egypt, after th murder of Gedalya (chapters 43-44).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The riddle of opposites.<\/em> Verse 10 suggests opposite types of prophetic activities: \u201cSee, I appoint you this day Over nations and kingdoms: To uproot and to pull down, To destroy and to overthrow, To build and to plant.\u201d How will these be expressed in his prophetic career? When is \u201cthe time to destroy\u201d and when \u201cthe time to plant\u201d? And where? These are questions worth thinking about throughout the book. There\u2019s more than one answer.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Bullet-proof vest<\/em>. That\u2019s what Jeremiah gets as basic equipment for his prophetic mission: \u201cI make you this day A fortified city, And an iron pillar, And bronze walls Against the whole land\u2014 Against Judah\u2019s kings and officers, And against its priests and citizens. They will attack you, But they shall not overcome you; For I am with you\u2014declares the LORD\u2014to save you\u201d (verses 18-19). In other words: be strong! The strongest. Good luck!
