Among the many surprises of this most surprising of prophets, Isaiah offers a glowing vision of Israel\u2019s ultimate redemption, entangling the future joy of the people of Israel with the simultaneous redemption of all humankind (and the biosphere as a whole). Either we are all redeemed, or we are not yet redeemed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Paying special attention to the end of the Exile, Isaiah offers a series of portrayals of the return of the Jewish people to our ancient homeland, and the ways that the nations of the world will participate in that return, will benefit from it, and will celebrate alongside us.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the midst of all that celebration of return and homecoming, Isaiah speaks specifically to the redemption of Jerusalem. Promising not to remain silent (for the sake of Zion), he shares with us its ultimate triumph, which he frames as an espousal. God and Israel marry. Jerusalem as honored bride.<\/span><\/p>\n

But it is not all Happily Ever After. At least, not quite yet. Part of our role is to remind God (hence, also to remember ourselves) that the redemption is not yet complete. \u201cUpon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set guardians who shall never be silent by day or by night. O you, the Lord remembrancers, take no rest and give no rest to God, until God establish Jerusalem and make her renowned on earth\u201d (verse 6).<\/span><\/p>\n

We need to remind God that the job is not yet finished. We may indeed control Jerusalem and already dwell within her walls and in the adjacent modern city. But not until Jerusalem is fully established in the eyes of the world, we and God have our work cut out for us.<\/span><\/p>\n

It does not suffice to simply control our Mother City in ways comparable to other famous cities. Jerusalem is called to a higher standard, to be the Mother to all those who are forgotten, outcast, shamed. Jerusalem is home to the widows and orphans of history, to the lame and the blind of the world. The Jewish vision of a real ingathering that excludes no one is bound up in the redemption of Jerusalem, and she seeks more than simply to be the locus of Jewish power. God can only establish Jerusalem through our efforts and work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Until God establish Jerusalem and make her renowned on earth: a synonym for justice, the very exemplar of inclusion and welcome.<\/span><\/p>\n

For that Jerusalem, we all long. And so does God.<\/span><\/p>\n
