Throughout the Book of Isaiah, we have highlighted Malbim\u2019s propensity for drawing distinctions between ostensible synonyms. Some were shared by other exegetes, but most were not. One distinction that is well-nigh unanimous, however, is between the two most frequent names of God, which Jewish tradition has long associated with two distinct divine attributes: justice (<\/span>Elohim<\/span><\/i>) and compassion (<\/span>Adon<\/span><\/i>). This distinction is maintained in v. 10: \u201cI greatly rejoice in the LORD (<\/span>Adon<\/span><\/i>) , my whole being exults in my God (<\/span>Elohim<\/span><\/i>). For He has clothed me with garments of triumph, wrapped me in a robe of victory, like a bridegroom adorned with a turban, like a bride bedecked with her finery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Radak cited this very distinction in the name of his father, Yosef, and Malbim*, too, utilized it, albeit in his characteristically unique way.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rejoicing is an external activity that indicates happiness\u2026 while exultation is the innermost joy over receiving an unanticipated favor. There is also a distinction between \u201cthe Lord\u201d and \u201cmy God,\u201d with the latter signifying His special providence. [Isaiah] said \u201cI shall rejoice\u201d out in the open in the Lord Who created all, and I shall \u201cexult\u201d a new inner joy as it is revealed to me that He is also my God whose providence extends to me, individually.<\/span><\/p>\n

The garments and robes mentioned in the verse also attracted Malbim\u2019s discernment.<\/span><\/p>\n

A person\u2019s inner \u201cgarment\u201d is tailored to his dimensions, while a \u201crobe\u201d is worn above his clothing and is not individually tailored. This indicates [A] that God will dress me in a salvation that is tailored to my dimensions and will be personal and individual. [B] Apart from the salvation He will provide me, all the nations will recognize my righteousness. Thereby, they will recognize the true religion and belief, idolaters will abandon their idols, and thereby I will be \u201cwrapped in a robe of victory\u201d \u2026 that will make my righteousness visible to all.<\/span><\/p>\n

This last distinction, between inner and outer appearance, is like the one conveyed earlier between rejoicing and exultation\u2014inner joy and its outward expression\u2014and the concomitant inference that one exults over an unanticipated favor. The Sages, too, distinguished between salvation that comes on schedule and that which is unanticipated. Indeed, they derive it from the final verse in the previous chapter: \u201cI the LORD will speed it in due time\u201d (61:22). If we merit salvation\u2014it will be hastened; otherwise, it will come, eventually, as scheduled.<\/span><\/p>\n
