Hezekiah and his colleagues wrote the book of Isaiah (Talmud Bavli, Baba Batra 15a)<\/span><\/p>\n

The Talmud informs us that the book of Isaiah was written\u00a0 by people other than Isaiah. Rashi explains that King Menashe executed Isaiah before he could write down his own prophecies. Amos Hacham finds evidence that one of Isaiah’s disciples was involved in the writing process of the book. For example in chapter eight,\u00a0 Isaiah has a prophecy of consolation for a future generation which was not applicable to his time and therefore Isaiah commands to \u201cbind<\/span> up the testimony, seal the instruction among my <\/span>disciples<\/b>\u201d (8:16).\u00a0 We see that in a later generation, a disciple of the prophet took it upon himself to teach the message of comfort that Isaiah had sealed up. This discipline testifies to his actions in chapter 50 \u201c<\/span>The Lord God gave me a <\/span>disciple\u2019s<\/b> tongue to know how to speak timely words to the weary. Morning by morning, He rouses, He rouses my ear to give heed like <\/span>disciples<\/b> (50:1).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The phrase \u201cThe Lord God\u201d frequently appears in this testimony of the disciple (50: 4, 5, 7, and 9). This allows us to identify other times when this disciple added comments to the book of Isaiah. For example, in 25:8, a prayer is added as an appendix to Isaiah’s words of comfort, \u201c<\/span>My <\/span>Lord GOD<\/b> will wipe the tears away from all faces and will put an end to the reproach of His people over all the earth<\/span>“. Similarly in 40:10, words of joy were written down upon seeing the fulfilment of Isaiah’s prophecy \u201c<\/span>Behold, the <\/span>Lord GOD<\/b> comes in might and his arm wins triumph for him!”.<\/span><\/p>\n

The phrase “The Lord God” also appears in chapter 61 in the final speech of the disciple, followed by a summary of the goals of the book of Isaiah: “<\/span>The spirit of the <\/span>Lord GOD<\/b> is upon me because the LORD has anointed me. He has sent me as a herald of joy to the humble, to bind up the wounded of heart, to proclaim release to the captives, liberation to the imprisoned, to proclaim a year of the LORD\u2019s favor and a day of vindication by our God, to comfort all who mourn, to provide for the mourners in Zion<\/span>” (61: 1-3). These words reveal to us the understanding of the disciple of his mission to collect, edit and publish all of Isaiah’s writings. By writing down the prophecies of Isaiah, the disciple himself rose to spiritual heights which enabled his words of praise and prayer to be incorporated into\u00a0 Isaiah’s prophecies.<\/span><\/p>\n

We certainly owe this disciple of Isaiah a huge debt of gratitude. He taught the comforting words of Isaiah to the broken generation of destruction. He transcribed the words of Isaiah, allowing all future generations to be inspired by them.
