In <\/span>our comments on Chapter 56<\/span><\/a>, we took note of Isaiah\u2019s repeated emphasis on Shabbat\u2014a phenomenon that reasserts itself towards the close of this chapter: \u201cIf you refrain from trampling the Sabbath, from pursuing your affairs on My holy day; if you call the Sabbath \u201cdelight,\u201d the LORD\u2019s holy day \u201chonored\u201d; and if you honor it and go not your ways nor look to your affairs, nor strike bargains\u201d (15). Halakhah utilizes this verse to prohibit weekday activities on Shabbat even if they are not, per se, labors. As such, it takes \u201ctrampling\u201d to prohibit taking \u201cgiant steps\u201d while walking, and \u201cpursuing your affairs\u201d to preclude discussions of personal business. Malbim*, who had previously defined Shabbat as \u201cthe foundation of our faith,\u201d commented:<\/span><\/p>\n

There are two commandments regarding Shabbat: [A] respite from labor, and [B] enjoyment. One should observe them both not on account of the physical pleasure they provide (because the body appreciates both relaxation and pleasure) but solely because they are divine commandments\u2026 There are also two aspects of the commandment of Shabbat: [A] respite, which itself is a commandment, and [B] the sanctity of the day, that God sanctified it to be rid of all quotidian needs. \u201cIf you refrain from trampling the Sabbath\u201d applies to the former, and \u201cpursuing your affairs\u201d is the latter, because it is \u201cMy holy day\u201d that is designated for sanctity and worshipping God. On it, you should not indulge your needs but only that which God desires.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding pleasure, it says: \u201cif you call the sabbath delight.\u201d [A] The pleasure should derive from the essential fact that the day is Shabbat. [B] [Regarding] \u201cThe LORD\u2019s holy day honored,\u201d the honor derives from the sanctity that God bestowed upon the day. By observing it for His sake, you will respect it by not doing [ordinary] things; i.e., with respect of your labors, you will take precautions not even to prepare something [permissible] for the following day. And with respect of affairs of pleasure, it should not be physical pleasure but spiritual: you must be cautious to not even speak of mundane matters but indulge only in the service of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

The dichotomy between the commemorative and prohibitive dimensions of Shabbat\u2014embodied in the contrast between \u201cRemember\u201d (<\/span>zakhor<\/span><\/i>) and \u201cObserve\u201d (<\/span>shamor<\/span><\/i>)\u2014afforded Malbim the opportunity to draw more of his characteristic distinctions.<\/span><\/p>\n
