  1. Best regards from Isaiah 1<\/em>. In chapter one of Isaiah, the prophet rebuked punctilious ritual observance when combined with immoral behavior. That was in the Temple. In this chapter\u2019s rebuke, there is no longer a Temple, but the problem is the same.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Shabbat, and a sabbatical sabbath<\/em>. The first part of the chapter deals with a fast day. The second, with Shabbat. It doesn\u2019t say which fast, but if it\u2019s Yom Kippur, then it\u2019s not any old fast. It is the sabbath of sabbaths, and even this holy day is not the one that God desires. This chapter by the way is the haftarah for the morning service on Yom Kippur.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Slavery and oppression<\/em>. When we hear from the prophet what we are expected to repair, we then understand the depths of the brokenness. There are slaves, there are oppressed, there are the hungry, and the wretched poor. The society at the beginning of the return to Zion is far from exemplary. At least for now.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. One verse, many laws<\/em>. The sages learned many halachot, ritual laws, regarding the Shabbat, from verse 13. Such as: \u201ctechum shabbat\u201d (the Shabbat limits for walking – see Sarah Rudolph\u2019s post on this), \u201coneg shabbat\u201d (physical enjoyment of the Shabbat), and the prohibition against discussing mundane manners on Shabbat. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
