What were the consequences of Joseph\u2019s economic plan? How did it affect the Israelites in the long run?<\/p>\n<p>The painting is divided into two large rectangles in the center and six squares, three on either side. The first scene, at the top right, visualizes the famine in the land \u2013 an emaciated couple with a dead baby in the woman\u2019s arms. The donkey between them is also only skin and bones, there is a vulture devouring a corpse. In these six squares the normally massive-looking pyramids that represent the burial place of the Pharaohs are rendered as thin constructions, reflecting the condition of the starving Egyptians.<\/p>\n<p>The center square on the right, visualizing 47:14, shows Joseph collecting the money that the famished people were obliged to pay for their rations. Receiving money from a gaunt figure painted yellow, Joseph gives him a sack of grain in return. In four of the squares, Joseph is standing in front of yellow, green, and white constructions, the granaries of stored grain that he collected from the Egyptians during the seven good years. The bottom square, which visualizes 47:16\u201317, shows a starving man, who no longer had any money, and thus was forced to give Joseph their livestock in exchange for grain.<\/p>\n<p>Another year went by and there was still famine in the land. The people had already lost all of their livestock, so they offered to exchange their land for food. The top square on the left shows a yellow skeletal figure giving Joseph a plot of land for Pharaoh. The next square down visualizes the verse: \u201cSo Joseph gained possession of all the farm land of Egypt for Pharaoh&#8230;\u201d (47:20). Joseph is sitting at a desk with a laptop computer designing a new feudal system because the once-free people of Egypt are now Pharaoh\u2019s serfs. In the bottom square on the left an Egyptian priest is standing on his own land: \u201cOnly the land of the priests he did not take over, for the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh\u201d (47:22).<\/p>\n<p>The large upper rectangle in the center of the painting pictures Joseph surveying all of the land of Egypt, where people are working in what are now Pharaoh\u2019s fields. Nonetheless, they are grateful to Joseph and Pharaoh for saving them from starvation during the long famine. The lower rectangle shows the way that Joseph\u2019s plan eventually redounded to the detriment of the Israelites. As the land now belonged to Pharaoh and he could treat his people as slaves, once Joseph died, a new king who did not know Joseph would consider the Israelites in the same light. This lower image is very similar to the one above it except that in place of the figure of Joseph we see Pharaoh overseeing the work of Israelite
