Jacob, who loved Joseph more than his other sons, gave Joseph a <em>kotonet passim<\/em> (an ornamented tunic). Consumed with jealousy, his brothers \u201chated him so that they could not speak a friendly word to him\u201d (Gen. 37:4).<\/p>\n<p>Jacob, oblivious to the brothers\u2019 enmity, sends Joseph to find his brothers and see how they were faring. When the brothers see Joseph coming they decide to kill him. They strip him of his tunic, which to them is an infuriating symbol of Joseph\u2019s arrogance and their father\u2019s favor, and prepare to take his life. However, Reuven, the eldest, suggests instead that they throw Joseph into an empty pit. They then sell him to passing merchants, and he is taken as a slave to Egypt. The brothers slaughter a kid, dip the tunic in the blood, and bring it to Jacob, who, recognizing it as Joseph\u2019s coat, cries out, \u201cMy son\u2019s tunic! A savage beast has devoured him!\u201d (37:33).<\/p>\n<p>What is the significance of the ornamented tunic \u2013 Joseph\u2019s coat of many colors \u2013 throughout the story?<\/p>\n<p>In the center of the upper part of Avner Moriah\u2019s painting we see Jacob holding the bloody coat. The brothers are standing together, portrayed as a unit, opposite their father, their featureless heads and necks seen above the stylized rectangle of their garments. Jacob\u2019s eyes are fixed on their identical, blank faces. One of the brothers has two arms showing, one hand grasping the edge of the tunic and the other, behind his back, holding a knife, alluding to the slaughtered kid.<\/p>\n<p>Above the image of Jacob, a wild animal is devouring a figure lying on the ground, an allusion to Jacob\u2019s cry \u201cJoseph was torn by a beast.\u201d To the left we see the pyramids with small figures of the Ishmaelite merchants on camels, which, with their shadows cast in front of them, mark Joseph\u2019s arrival in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>On the right we see Joseph in the pit, visible owing to light coming in from the top, with a shadow behind him. In the center is the sad and cruel image of the kid lying peacefully in a green pasture, unaware of the brothers who will slaughter it. To the left Jacob is descending into Sheol (the Underworld), refusing to be comforted, declaring that he \u201cwill go down mourning to my son in Sheol\u201d (Gen. 37:35).<\/p>\n<p>The artist seems to regard Jacob\u2019s descent into Sheol and Abraham\u2019s ascent to Mount Moriah as parallel episodes. Both fathers favored their younger sons. In both episodes an animal was slaughtered. In each the truth was twisted or stretched. However, whereas Abraham was obeying God\u2019s command, Jacob\u2019s gift to Joseph was his own misguided act and it led to appalling misery.<\/p>\n","image":{"ID":67306,"id":67306,"title":"09
