While he attributed their victory to God\u2019s assistance, he also praised them for their mutual assistance (6), which he described, rhetorically, as: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The woodworker (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charash<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) encourages the smith (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzoref<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); he who flattens with the hammer [encourages] him who pounds the anvil. He says of the riveting, \u2018It is good!\u2019 and he fixes it with nails, that it may not topple (7). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Rashi and Radak attributed these actions to the fashioning of statues, Malbim* placed them in a more suitable military context. (Our treatment of Malbim, here, will require us to set aside the J.P.S. translation of the text).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charash<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the one who manufactures weapons. The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzoref<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mines the iron and the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charash<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must wait until the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzoref<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> completes his work. However, they will rush to prepare weapons and ammunition to the extent that the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charash<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose work is usually delayed, will assist the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzoref<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mine the iron and smelt it, so they can make swords and spears from it. Similarly, the one \u201cwho flattens\u201d the instrument with the hammer when the process is completed will assist him \u201cwho pounds the anvil\u201d at its inception without waiting until he completes his own activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise the one who \u201csays of the riveting \u2018it is good\u2019\u201d will attach two pieces of a broken sword together temporarily, strengthen them \u201cwith nails\u201d for an impermanent bond so they do not collapse or come apart and declare \u201cit is good.\u201d On account of their haste to do battle, even a sword that was broken and reattached with nails will suffice them.
