Ibn Ezra explained that this prophecy of consolation follows immediately upon the one of doom that Isaiah prophesied when Hezekiah foolishly showed off his treasures to the emissaries of the king of Babylon (chapter 39). He cited an earlier exegete, Rabbi Moshe HaKohen, who said that the consolation was intended to be fulfilled during the Second Temple, adding his own opinion assigning it to \u201cour exile\u201d (i.e., the messianic future).<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding v.2: \u201cSpeak tenderly to Jerusalem, and declare to her that her term of service is over, that her iniquity is expiated; for she has received at the hand of the LORD double for all her sins,\u201d Ibn Ezra interpreted the doubling as twice the punishment meted out to any other nation, and Radak (after citing Ibn Ezra) reported on his father\u2019s interpretation that one portion was their own and the second was the one due to their ancestors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim,* however, drew the following thematic distinctions:<\/span><\/p>\n

Redemption can come either before its [appointed] time, if they are meritorious, or if they have suffered their punishment, or, eventually, even without merit, He will redeem them at the appointed time, therefore, [Isaiah] spoke a double consolation\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHer term of service is over:\u201d If they are redeemed when the appointed time arrives\u2014because they will not have merited its advancement, or at an earlier time because \u201cher iniquity is expiated\u201d by means of repentance and merit, or \u201cshe has received at the hand of the LORD double for all her sins,\u201d that He will double their privations and punishment until they are equal to all her sins. This can be likened to one who was sentenced to ten years in jail and ten lashes a day, but the jailer beat him one hundred times each day, so he received his due punishment in one year and was released.<\/span><\/p>\n

This occurred in Egypt because the intensity of the oppression completed the four hundred years in only two hundred and ten.<\/span><\/p>\n

One wonders how Malbim would have viewed the establishment of the State of Israel so soon after the Holocaust as an example of a redemption that followed upon a doubled punishment?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
