A device of this sort has been found in Egypt. The King James Version and modern Hebrew understands ma\u2019a lot as \u201cdegrees,\u201d but these were probably actual steps, which is what the word usually means in biblical Hebrew.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 2: Prophets, W.
