All rabbis- whether Reform, Conservative or Orthodox- give sermons.\u00a0 In Hebrew, the sermon is called the “<\/span>drasha<\/span><\/em>” (from the word \u201c<\/span>drash<\/span><\/em>\u201d meaning \u201cto seek out\u201d). The sermon, or <\/span>drasha<\/span><\/em>, is the tool in which the rabbi shows the relevance of the ancient words of the Torah for his (or her) current time. The first recorded <\/span>drasha<\/span><\/em> can be found in the 34<\/span>th<\/span> chapter of Isaiah. \u201c<\/span>Dirshu<\/span><\/em> (seek out) <\/span>from the Book of the Lord and read<\/span>” (34:16) says Isaiah as he invites the listeners of his <\/span>drasha<\/span><\/em> to continue to learn from the verses of the Torah, as he did.\u00a0 Isaiah does not say what was the issue of his time that needed to be addressed<\/span>, <\/span><\/i>but it can be figured out by comparing the context of Isaiah chapter 34 and the beginning of the book of Leviticus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter 34 of Isaiah starts with the Hebrew word “<\/span>Karvu<\/span><\/em>” (“Come near!”), as Isaiah calls out to the people to come hear his prophecy. “<\/span>Karvu<\/span><\/em>” is from the same root as <\/span>korbanot<\/span><\/em>, the offerings mentioned in the first chapter of Leviticus. Isaiah then states that God will punish the Edomite enemies of Israel and the “stench (of their corpses) shall rise” (34:2).\u00a0 This contrasts with the rising \u201cpleasant-smelling odor” of the offerings mentioned in the first chapter of Leviticus (1:9). The book of Leviticus then mentions lambs and goats as some of the animals which one may bring as offerings, and Isaiah states that the Edomite enemies will be the “lamb and goats” that will be slaughtered (34:6). The book of Leviticus then discusses the special day when God’s presence will appear to the people of Israel (9:4), whereas Isaiah speaks about the special day of revenge that God will take upon those who fought with the people of Israel (34:8). The book of Leviticus then proceeds to list the birds of prey which are forbidden for the Israelites to eat since they are a holy people (11: 45), while Isaiah explains that these birds of prey will make their dwelling place in Edom since God has punished the Edomite for their sins and turned their land into a place of eternal desolation (34:11-16).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From this <\/span>drasha<\/span><\/em>, we can give an educated guess to what was happening at the time of Isaiah. It seems that the Edomite were again making the claim (as did Esau their ancestor) that they were the true first-born son and therefore deserved to inherit the land. Isaiah’s <\/span>drasha<\/em> <\/span>comes to reassure the People of Israel that the laws of holiness and the promise of inheriting the land, as mentioned in the book of Leviticus, are pertinent to Israel, while a fate of punishment, destruction, and desolation is what awaits the brazen
