Does it seem to you that people are more easily triggered than they once were? We live in a time of such ready violence, unrestrained anger, endless conflict. Not only the resurgence of anti-Jewish bigotry (from left and from right) but hatreds old and new erupt on every continent and every region. No one is exempt from this torrent of vituperation and assault.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps one step back from this precipice of hate and destruction would be to recall what the goal truly is. Rather than confusing our preferred policies as the goal, can we agree that they are the means to the end? We may differ about the most effective ways to accomplish our goal, but the goal isn\u2019t one economic policy or another, one set of imposed treaties or another. The goal is summarized well by our beloved prophet, Isaiah:<\/span><\/p>\n

For the work of righteousness shall be peace,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And the effect of righteousness, calm and confidence forever.<\/span>
\n<\/span>My people will dwell in peaceful homes,<\/span>
\n<\/span>In secure dwellings,<\/span>
\n<\/span>In tranquil places of rest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The goal of all our policies \u2013 the ones we advocate and the ones we oppose \u2013 is not the policy itself. The goal is calm, confidence, peace, security, tranquility.<\/span><\/p>\n

If we can refocus our attention on those shared goals, then our disagreements about how to get there become an opportunity to learn from each other and to attempt to find common ground. We still will have brute disagreements that will need to be voted up or down. We will still have criminals and terrorists who need to be confronted and contained. But for the vast preponderance of humanity, we could remember our shared commitment to these simple treasures: safety, confidence, security, and we could get back to the business of making sure they are available to all: not only our friends, but our enemies as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because only when everyone has access to security \u2013 ample food, housing, health, meaningful work \u2013 only then is peace a possibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

Isaiah is right: righteousness is the most prudent way to advance realistic goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

And it is the goals that will bring us all together, so we can shout about how best to attain
