Today\u2019s entry is dedicated to Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg, an incredible scholar,<\/span> fellow 929 contributor<\/span><\/a>, and feminist hero of mine. Just last week Rabbi Ruttenberg<\/span> tweeted Isaiah 32:6<\/span><\/a> — \u201cA fool speaks nonsense, And his heart inclines toward wickedness\u2026 to keep the hungry person unsatisfied And to withhold drink from the thirsty\u201d — and inspired me to rethink Isaiah 32.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I had initially chosen this chapter because it was in keeping with the theme of<\/span> this eight-part series<\/span><\/a>: feminine imagery in the Book of Isaiah. And there is, of course, a healthy dose of Isaiah\u2019s telltale patriarchal misogyny: <\/span><\/p>\n

Rise up, you women who are at ease! Hear my voice! You careless daughters, give ear to my speech! For days beyond a year you will be troubled, you careless women; for the vintage will fail. The harvest won\u2019t come. Tremble, you women who are at ease! Be troubled, you careless ones! Strip yourselves, make yourselves naked, and put sackcloth on your waist. Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is what Rabbi Ya\u2019akov Trump (no relation)<\/span> deems Isaiah 32<\/span><\/a>\u2019s \u201ccycle of destruction and growth\u201d in which Isaiah is threatening Jewish cities regarding their inevitable exile,\u00a0 calling them \u2018women\u2019 and \u2018daughters\u2019 to degrade them, because what could be more belittling, really, than calling someone a girl?<\/span><\/p>\n

But Isaiah\u2019s warning — with its typically Isaian misogynistic metaphor — arrives in the context of the promise of a great miracle, and it is that miracle I want to focus on today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A righteous king, Isaiah prophesies, will come to power, and he will bring about a just society by serving as a moral banner for the people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Israelites whom Isaiah is addressing have already been governed by a king who served as a military — but not a moral — ruler, and the result was exile. What the people need now, Isaiah sees in a moment of true prophecy, is a different kind of leader, one who serves as a <\/span>moral<\/span><\/em> example, so that <\/span>society<\/span><\/em> might succeed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The future Isaiah promises will succeed through justice and righteousness, through tzedakah:<\/span><\/p>\n

Then justice shall abide in the wilderness and righteousness shall dwell on the farm land. For the work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness, calm and confidence forever.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA fool speaks nonsense,\u201d Rabbi Ruttenberg reminded us last week, \u201cand his heart inclines toward wickedness.\u201d What is this \u2018wickedness\u2019 of which Isaiah speaks?\u00a0 Failing to give food and drink to those who are hungry and thirsty; failing to care for those who have less than us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The people need a righteous moral leader, a compassionate leader who cares for others and inspires the masses to do the same. In turn, the people must partner with such a leader in this critical work. When righteousness thrives in society, from the top down and the bottom up, only then can we
