In the Biblical context this refers to the Egyptians of Isaiah\u2019s time, who according to this prophecy, will be both unable to help themselves, and also to come to the aid of others, such as Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The image of God\u2019s outstretched arm calls to mind the memorable depiction of Israel\u2019s crossing the Red Sea, incorporated in the Passover Haggadah: \u201cI will redeem you with an outstretched arm\u2026\u201d (Exodus 6:6, see also Psalms 136:12 \u2013 \u201cWith a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm\u201d and elsewhere).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is interesting that in ancient Egyptian royal literature, Pharaoh is frequently described as using his &#8220;mighty hand&#8221; or &#8220;outstretched arm&#8221; to perform mighty deeds. For example, in the Egyptian \u201cKadesh Poem\u201d (12<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BCE), Pharaoh is extolled: \u201cYou are the son of Amun, achieving with his arms, you devastate the land of Hatti by your valiant arm.\u201d This has been compared to Exodus 15:6: \u201cYour right hand, O Lord, glorious in power. Your right hand, O Lord, shatters the foe!\u201d By describing God&#8217;s victory over Egypt in this language, the Bible argues that the Israelite God, with his supremely powerful right hand, has overcome, Pharaoh, the greatest earthly leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An early Midrashic text (Mekhilta de-Rabbi Ishmael, Shirata 9 on Exodus 15:12) states: When the Holy One, Blessed be He, stretches out His arm, the wicked perish from the world, as it is said: \u201cAnd He will stretch out His arm against the North and destroy Assyria\u201d (Zephaniah 2:13). And it also says: \u201cThus said the Lord God: I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines\u201d (Ezekiel 25:16). And it says: \u201cI will stretch out My arm against Judah\u201d (Zephaniah 1:4). And it says: \u201cThus said the Lord God: I will stretch out My hand against Edom\u201d (Ezekiel 26:13). A parable \u2013 to what may this be likened? To eggs placed in the hand of a man. If he but turns his hand a little they all fall down and break. For as it says: \u201c\u201cAnd when the Lord stretches out His arm, the helper shall trip and the helped one shall fall, and both shall perish together\u201d (Isaiah 31:3).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: Relief of Seti I (pharaoh, 13th c.
