  1. Pride and drunkenness<\/em>. These are the two accusations of Samaria, and they\u2019re connected. Drunkenness is an outgrowth of overweening pride. And the pride, or hubris, is being drunk with power. Both of them imply being shut off from other people and a disconnect from reality.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. That\u2019s not funny<\/em>! The governors of the people are termed \u201cmen of mockery\u201d in verse 14, which may teach us something about their attitude to prophecy. Thus, the prophet adds to his words regarding the future of Jerusalem: \u201cTherefore, refrain from mockery\u2026 For I have heard a decree of destruction From my Lord GOD of Hosts Against all the land.\u201d(verse 22).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A touchstone<\/em>. The corner stone that God will place in Jerusalem reflects a moral reality. Together with the measuring line and weights mentioned in verse 17, the image of the rebuilt city is one built on fairness, equity and justice. That is the image of the New Jerusalem, a city of justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The hill of Perazim; the vale of Gibeon<\/em>. Behind these two locations mentioned in verse 21, lies a story of miraculous salvation – that we\u2019ve already read before. On the hill of (or Ba\u2019al) Perazim, David defeated his Philistine enemies (II Sam. 5). In the vale of Gibeon, Joshua defeated the kings of Canaan, with a little divine help (Joshua 10).<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Gosh, golly gee<\/em>! That is how God\u2019s power is described in the expected visitation: \u201cTo do His work\u2014 Strange is His work! And to perform His task\u2014 Astounding is His task!\u201d (verse 21).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. The wisdom of the farmer<\/em>. Verses 24-28 describe the work of the farmer, and the results of his actions. Every plowing action is according to its seed, likewise the subsequent tools and actions for separating seeds, etc. A good farmer will appreciate the fine detail of this metaphor.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Between town and country<\/em>. Opposite the drunken city, who live as if there were no tomorrow, Isaiah describes the measured and well planned steps of the
