It comes from the myth of Ba\u2018al known from the city of Ugarit, whose literature comes from about the 14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BCE. There we read:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you [Ba\u2018al] smite Lotan, the serpent, destroy the twisting serpent, the close-coiled one of the seven heads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The similarities between the Ugaritic line and the line from Isaiah are so great that there is no doubt that the one lies behind the other. This raises other questions, though. How, for example, did knowledge of the Ugaritic myth, get to Jerusalem of almost a millennium later?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose of this borrowing is clear. Isaiah makes the claim that the God of Israel, rather than the Canaanite Ba\u2018al, is the most powerful deity, the one who destroys the sea monsters and brings peace and stability to the
