Later in the story when Rebekah overhears that Isaac is planning to give Esau the blessing of the first born, she devises a plan to deceive her blind husband so that he will bless Jacob instead.

How does the painting view Rebekah and Jacob’s problematic deception of Isaac? How does it portray each of the four characters involved in the story?

In this painting we see Jacob standing inside an arched-top tent; his head is bent and he is looking at the red food in the bowl in his hands. His father, Isaac, who was “old and his eyes were too dim to see” (Gen. 27:1), is standing next to him. Isaac’s hands are raised over Jacob’s head in a gesture of blessing. Jacob’s arms and neck are painted red, as Rebekah, to replicate the hairiness of Esau, “covered his hands and the hairless part of his neck with the skins of the kids” (Gen 27:16) that she had Jacob bring from the flock. The goats at the entrance to the tent testify to it

Rebekah is standing outside the tent, her hand raised to her ear to hear what is being said within. It was in this way that she had learned earlier that Isaac had asked Esau to “go out into the open and hunt me some game. Then prepare a dish for me such as I like… so that I may give you my innermost blessing before I die” (Gen 27:3–4). The V-shape of her arm is exactly parallel to Isaac’s, suggesting that, despite the deception, they are a pair playing out the divine plan.

Jacob’s only concern in pretending to be Esau is that Isaac not discover the deception and bestow a curse upon him instead of a blessing.

The images in the top of the tent visualize the words of the blessing: on the right, “Abundance of new grain and wine” (Gen.27:28) and, on the left, “Let people serve you,” with one figure bowing down to another, and “Be master over your brothers” (Gen. 27:28), with a tall figure holding a staff facing others. In the distance, above the image of Rebekah, we see Esau, a tired figure painted red holding the game he had hunted for his father. The bowl with the red food for which Esau sold his birthright is at the very center of the picture on a diagonal line with the red figure of the defeated Esau.

It is clear that the painting has a dual focus: the legitimacy of the transference of the birthright and the strong figure of Rebekah, who finessed the entire episode to fulfill the words that God spoke to her before her sons were born.

06
