Isaiah 26:5 sounds like there will be no resurrection: \u201cThey are dead, they can never live; Shades, they can never rise!\u201d But what would we do then with the passages that say that God can bring people back from the dead, and will do so? That God <\/span>can<\/span><\/i> do so is found in Ezekiel 37, the vision of the dry bones:<\/span><\/p>\n

Prophesy, therefore, and say to them: Thus said the Lord God: I am going to open your graves and lift you out of the graves, O My people, and bring you to the land of Israel. \u2026 I will put My breath into you and you shall live again, and I will set you upon your own soil. Then you shall know that I the Lord have spoken and have acted\u201d\u2014declares the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n

That God <\/span>will<\/span><\/i> do so is found only in Daniel 12 (where it is not entirely positive):<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of those that sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to eternal life, others to reproaches, to everlasting abhorrence.<\/span><\/p>\n

What to do with our verse, then? The midrash (Pirqe de-Rabbi Eliezer 34:2) explains that it relates only to certain people, who do not deserve to live again:<\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Yo\u1e25anan said: All the dead will arise at the resurrection of the dead, except the generation of the Flood, as it is said, \u201cThe dead shall not live, the Shades shall not rise\u201d (Isaiah 26:14).<\/span><\/p>\n
