By the time of Isaiah, the Phoenicians had established settlements as far away as Spain, at the other end of the sea, and had founded Carthage, already then a major site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is hard to know what exactly the Phoenicians did wrong, and some scholars have suggested that it is in fact nothing more than plying the Mediterranean for trade. The Tanakh may be wary of the seas, open as they are to a wide range of cultures and all sorts of external influences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Israelites in the Bible
