This chapter, entitled \u201cThe Valley of Vision Pronouncement,\u201d is\u2014according to all the traditional exegetes\u2014aimed at Jerusalem, which is so-called on account of the many visionary prophets who either resided there (like Isaiah himself) or addressed her. Its central theme of impending doom and disaster can be summarized in the words of v. 5: \u201cFor my Lord GOD of Hosts had a day of tumult and din and confusion\u2014 Kir raged in the Valley of Vision, and Shoa on the hill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Treating \u201cShoa\u201d (which is spelled with an `<\/span>ayin<\/span><\/i> and has nothing to do with the Holocaust) as a proper noun, the translators (JPS, 1978) noted \u201cmeaning of Heb. uncertain\u2026 see Ezekiel 23:23,\u201d in which Shoa appears indicating a place in Mesopotamia. This matches Kir, which was situated in Aram\/Syria. The implication is that these are allies of Babylonia who will participate in the attack on Jerusalem and cause the tumult, din, and confusion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Curiously, the traditional exegetes all saw it quite differently, deriving <\/span>shoa<\/span><\/em> from the common noun <\/span>shav`a<\/span><\/em> meaning to cry out for help. Incorporated into Malbim\u2019s** commentary, it yielded the following disquisition on how not to conduct a war:<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to the conquest, God confused them so they were delivered into the hands of their enemies and defeated\u2026 After the enemy withdrew, they went, confused, to the different lands of their captivity, all on account of God\u2019s decree of tumult.<\/span><\/p>\n

[The prophet] tells how they were foolish in battle and did not know how to wage war. When the enemy approached\u2014while the wall [of Jerusalem] was still strong and not breached, they should have taken arms from the armory and fought from atop the wall. Instead, they did the opposite. First the enemy undermined and uprooted the city wall while [the defenders] did not oppose them; rather, they turned for help (<\/span>shoa<\/span><\/i>) to the mountain, seeking to survive on Mount Zion, allowing the enemy to destroy the wall.<\/span><\/p>\n

The expectation that the mountain\u2014i.e., the Temple\u2014would, in and of itself, provide protection is also reflected in the following verse from Jeremiah: \u201cDon\u2019t put your trust in illusions and say, \u201cThe Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD are these [buildings]\u201d (7:4). As we will yet come to see, the people ignored his exhortation and their imprudent reliance on the very existence of the Temple as a bulwark against the Babylonians cost them their independence\u2014and its destruction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
