I.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I was little,<\/span>
\n<\/span>We lived in Grandfather\u2019s house<\/span>
\n<\/span>That overlooked the sea,<\/span>
\n<\/span>A house overflowing with rooms and gardens<\/span>
\n<\/span>Where I played with my cousins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Grandfather’s study stood his desk,<\/span>
\n<\/span>In whose top drawer was a locked box of carved wood and gold;<\/span>
\n<\/span>And in Grandfather’s vest was the key that would unlock it;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Reverently Grandfather would hand me the box and key,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And tell me, \u201cOpen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Inside was a photograph of Grandmother<\/span>
\n<\/span>Before she had married<\/span>
\n<\/span>And who had passed away the day I was born;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Inside were pink envelopes with thin pink sheets<\/span>
\n<\/span>Covered with delicate handwriting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While I sat on the floor, playing<\/span>
\n<\/span>With my marbles and little carved animals,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Grandfather would sit by his desk with the pink envelopes<\/span>
\n<\/span>And read;<\/span>
\n<\/span>And read.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

II.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Grandfather lay dying,<\/span>
\n<\/span>He called each of his sons, each of his daughters,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Each of his grandchildren,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And blessed us one by one.<\/span>
\n<\/span>I cried.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Grandfather then sat up on his bed<\/span>
\n<\/span>And asked my mother to bring him his vest.<\/span>
\n<\/span>To me he handed a key,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The key to the wooden, golden box.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cTreasure it,\u201d he whispered,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you are older,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Open the box, my child,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Read<\/span>
\n<\/span>And remember,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And read.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

III.<\/span><\/p>\n

After Grandfather\u2019s death,<\/span>
\n<\/span>We left his house<\/span>
\n<\/span>And moved far away,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Squandering the inheritance<\/span>
\n<\/span>Grandfather had bequeathed us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My shoes became shabby,<\/span>
\n<\/span>My trousers tattered,My coat threadbare.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In my coat pockets grew holes;<\/span>
\n<\/span>The key Grandfather gave me\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fell into a puddle<\/span>
\n<\/span>And turned into a tadpole<\/span>
\n<\/span>I could not catch;<\/span>
\n<\/span>A butterfly I could not reach;<\/span>
\n<\/span>A bird I could not grasp;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And the bird flew higher and higher<\/span>
\n<\/span>To emerge as a star<\/span>
\n<\/span>Hid inside a constellation<\/span>
\n<\/span>Before the star fell down<\/span>
\n<\/span>On the dark side of the moon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

IV.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every night I wake up sweating<\/span>
\n<\/span>In a nightmare: <\/span>I am small again,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Playing in the house by the sea;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Grandfather beckons me with his finger;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Hand in hand we walk to his study\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Where he opens the top drawer of his desk.<\/span>
\n<\/span>His hands tremble as he hands me the box:<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cWhere is the key,<\/span>
\n<\/span>My child,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Where is the key?<\/span><\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
