Not wanting Isaac to wed from among \u201cthe daughters of the Canaanites\u201d (Gen. 24:3), he asks his trusted servant to go to his family in Aram-Naharaim to choose a bride.<\/p>\n<p>Why is Abraham sending his servant and not Isaac himself? What can we learn about Isaac and Rebekah from the Bible\u2019s description of their meeting? Why are the verses quoted here and their visualization in the painting so significant in terms of continuing the process that started with Abraham?<\/p>\n<p>Avner Moriah\u2019s portrayal for <em>Hayei<\/em><em> Sarah<\/em> focuses on the events after \u201cRebekah and her maids arose, mounted the camels, and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah, and went his way\u201d (Gen. 24:61). We see two camels against a background of green and light- and dark-blue barren mountains that shed a purple shadow under the late afternoon sun. The small figure of Isaac with a staff in his hand is seen in the far distance, standing in front of Sarah\u2019s tent. Isaac himself is a self-effacing figure, a passive bridge between his father, Abraham, and his son Jacob, a puzzling and not clearly defined personality.<\/p>\n<p>The Bible tells us that Isaac \u201cwent out walking in the field toward evening\u201d (Gen. 24:63), and he \u201clifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, there were camels coming\u201d (Gen. 24:63). He sees the camels but perhaps does not realize that one of them is carrying Rebekah. She, on the other hand, having left her family and her home, is very anxious to meet her future husband, and \u201cshe alighted from the camel\u201d (Gen 24:64). The image of her women standing rather than sitting on the camel to get a better look at the distant figure would appear to be a deliberate reflection of Rebekah\u2019s excitement.<\/p>\n<p>Rebekah, the servant, the maids, and the camels all cast shadows on the ground in front of them, which creates a realistic picture of the time of day, \u201ctoward evening,\u201d but the figure of Isaac in the distance has no shadow. Knowing that Isaac is meditating in the field and seeing him in the distance without a shadow suggests that he was somewhat disconnected from their reality. What the artist is visualizing here is Rebekah\u2019s own \u201c<em>Lekh Lekha<\/em>\u201d journey in order to carry on Abraham\u2019s divine task. In her active engagement Rebekah stands in contrast to a passive, contemplative Isaac, who finally takes notice of her and eventually brings her into his mother\u2018s tent. Even so, it is clear that in his own way Isaac understands his destined role in the furtherance of his father\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n<p>The conclusion of the <em>parasha<\/em> notes three successive steps: Isaac brings Rebekah to his mother\u2019s tent; he marries her; he loves her and only then is he comforted in the loss of his mother.<\/p>\n","image":{"ID":65944,"id":65944,"title":"05 Hayei
