It is hard for Americans to realize what it is like to live in a small country, buffeted by the political forces swirling about, subject to the whims and wills of the great powers. Ancient Judah knew this well, though, acutely aware of the fact that if Assyria or Egypt wanted to, they could sweep through the land, demand taxes or captives, and institute regime change. Leading such a state is a constant negotiation: how much to appease? What can we get away with? How restless are my people? What compromises will they accept?<\/span><\/p>\n

In our chapter, Isaiah foretells a very different future. He envisions a highway (<\/span>mesilah<\/span><\/em>) from Egypt to Assyria \u2013 passing, presumably, directly through Judah. Assyria and Egypt will freely intermingle, and \u201cIsrael will be a third to Egypt and Assyria\u201d! No longer with the Jews have to deal with being bullied around by the great powers; they will take their place among the great powers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Astonishingly, Isaiah seems prepared to trade the chosenness of the Jews for the political benefit of a seat at the table. He concludes this vision with the blessing which God will say in the future: \u201cBlessed is MY NATION EGYPT, the work of My hands Assyria, and my inheritance, Israel.\u201d I cannot capitalize MY NATION EGYPT enough to emphasize just how astonishing this line is.<\/span><\/p>\n

Isaiah is pointing to what seem to be the horns of an eternal Jewish dilemma. The price of Jewish normalization in the world is, well, normalization. If the Jews cease to be different, they can be like the other nations. But then we are no longer Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n
