Prophesying about the eventual destruction of Egypt, Isaiah stated: \u201cI will incite Egyptian against Egyptian; they shall war with each other, every man with his fellow, city with city and kingdom with kingdom\u201d (2). Ibn Ezra and Radak implied that this internecine warfare would result simply from confusion (<\/span>bilbul<\/span><\/em>); Malbim,* however, saw something more sophisticated\u2014and, yet, also more sinister:<\/span><\/p>\n

Customarily, when kingdoms are at war, all the cities of one kingdom will make peace among themselves and form an alliance to fight, united, against their opponents. Similarly, when cities are at war with one another, the population of each city will make peace among themselves in order to present a united front against the opposing city. And when one clan is at war with another, all the close family members in each clan will band together to form a unified front.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here, however, first brothers will fight \u201ceach other\u201d until there are divisions amongst members of the same family. Then, \u201cevery man with his fellow\u201d will pit families against one another, followed by city against city and kingdom against kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this fashion, they will be at war both internally and externally: an internal civil war between brothers, families, and cities, and an external war between kingdoms.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the contemporary world, where tribal, national, religious, and ethnic relationships compete and often clash, Malbim\u2019s version of the breakup of Egyptian society is surely more realistic\u2014and dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n
