  2. Special empathy<\/em>. The empathy for the Moabite suffering is not at all obvious. Not only because of the historical tension between the kingdoms, but also because of the very recent events (732-33 BCE) when Moab came into possession of Israelite territory that was conquered Assyria, and given to Moab after the exiling of their Israelite inhabitants. For those reasons, some commentators see the whole chapter as a sarcastic lampoon, and not a sympathetic lament.<\/span><\/li>\n
