As we have already seen several times, Malbim* was inclined to put as positive a spin on the prophecies of Isaiah as their language permitted. Here, too, his substantive remarks on God\u2019s salvation, featured prominently\u2014and repetitively\u2014in vs. 2-3, were predicated upon the distinctions between being saved and simply being assisted out of one\u2019s distress.<\/span><\/p>\n

Assistance (`<\/span>ezer<\/span><\/em>) is only help and the major part of [the activity] still needs to be done by the one being assisted. Salvation (<\/span>yeshu`ah<\/span><\/em>), however, requires no action on the part of the one being saved; it is all done by the savior\u2026 that is why he says \u201cBehold the God who saves me,\u201d as an act of complete grace, and therefore \u201cI am confident, unafraid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Drawing water (5) likewise came in for one of Malbim\u2019s fine distinctions, namely that the verb SH-\u2018-B implies a lesser effort than D-L-H (see Exodus 2:19). Therefore:<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only will you be unafraid lest salvation pass you by, you will even obtain new salvations, from time to time, as though the \u201cwells of salvation\u201d had been opened, which flow perpetually and are renewed even as water is drawn from them. To this extent, the one who draws from them does so in joy, knowing that the source will not dry up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps Malbim\u2019s interpretation of these verses can account for their incorporation into the Havdalah service performed at the end of every Shabbat. We recognize that we, too, are drawing, almost effortlessly, upon ceaseless reserves of salvation and we express our joy that no matter how much we draw from them, they seem never to be exhausted.<\/span><\/p>\n
