Continuing with the connection to the redemption from Egypt in the previous chapter, the song of redemption quotes from the Song of the Sea (12:2), and also quotes from the Psalms (105:1). If this redemption is as great as the original Exodus, then surely the song will be great as well (30:29).

Most of the various parts of the redemption vision can only be fulfilled by God; for who else can usher in world peace or gather the exiles as in chapter 11? But this final aspect of the redemption is something the Jewish people can control; they may author their own song and sing words of praise. Yet, there is no record of the people singing any song of thanks when they are redeemed (see 37:36), an observation that was not lost on the Midrash (Ptikha to Eikha Rabba 30) and Talmud (Sanhedrin 94a).

Indeed, the traditional Jewish explanation of this chapter has generally been that it is precisely this flaw that was the reason why the dramatic Messianic predictions of chapters 2, 9, and 11 did not come to pass. Yes, Hezekiah was a righteous leader from the line of David, as the Messiah would be. But the Messiah would also need to be someone who would sing the songs of praise to recognize that the dramatic redemption was Divine in its origin and not merely politics, war and statecraft playing their usual roles. For whatever reason (was he too weary from the siege? too wounded from the losses of life and territory on the way?) Hezekiah was unable to compose the songs of thanks – and this disqualified him from becoming the Messiah as originally planned.

Maimonides famously writes that positive predictions cannot be revoked and are not contingent on human beings keeping up to a standard. Though this is one view in Jewish philosophy, the Talmud has a different view on the basis of our story. Hezekiah is predicted to be the Messiah who ushers in world peace – provided he can maintain the highest standard. Without a thank-you Psalm he falls just short, and so the Northern tribes never return, and world peace is still a goal we aspire to in the future, not an achievement already reached in the past.

2019-11-07
